I took the show on the road for the big 200th episode, while it didn’t go exactly as planned, the universe still gave me what I asked for, an interview with a great artist in Arizona. DaDadoh was kind enough to sit in the car with me for an interview just minutes after meeting for the first time. We talked about his origins in Virginia, moving to Phoenix, musical influences, transitioning from rock to rap and back again, and more. I recently lifted the band on recommendations, I’m trying to get away from the algorithm and have a more personal, organic connection to the artists I feature. Serf Ninjas comes courtesy of Rowland. I enjoyed all their stuff, really reminded me of The Bicycats (check them out if you haven’t, episode 28). Lucille Klement popped up in my algorithm, probably after all the Kelsi Walker binge-listening I was doing, and it was love at first listen. I found Kelsi Walker thanks to a flyer shared by Mom Friend (episode 128). I checked out her music and was immediately captured by her big voice and how effortless it sounds. It cut me deep in my panza! Her two albums were in heavy rotation, I had a difficult time sharing just one song…almost brought two! I found Estrogen Projection a while back, so long ago, in fact, that I thought they might’ve broken up. I didn’t see them posting much on the socials for a while, but it looks like they’re back in action. They’ve been posting shows, and while I’d love to catch one, they’re all the way in Lincoln, Nebraska, so that might not be in the cards for me. My first exposure to Dining Dead was the track “Angel of Logic” off their most recent album, Is This a House? I thought about sharing that song, but it had too many listens. I came across Blair Borax thanks to the Instagram algorithm, I almost lost her, but luckily I noticed we had Joe Plowman in common and was able to quickly relocate her. I checked out all three of her full-length albums, truly an embarrassment of riches. In the end, I settled on “Oh No!” off 2024’s Tender Lately for it’s deep lyrics and sing-a-long quality. Sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason behind why I click on an artist, I’m just a big weirdo. In this case, Berenice caught my eye because she reminded me of one of my favorite movies. I’m featuring her song “Wifey Material” which is a bit of a departure from what I usually bring to the show. The first time I heard it, it took me back to cruising around with my best friend when we first learned to drive. I don’t remember exactly how I found Soup Dreams, I think they were playing a show with Bucko (episode 121)? I do remember seeing their name on a flyer with a bunch of other bands and the name alone caught my eye. Long-time listeners will know why. I checked out their album Hellbender and it was in heavy rotation. I was really tempted to go with “Hunger” because the vocals and lyrics cut me deep in my panza, but I landed on “Dust” instead. I came across Folk Face when they were the featured artist at the Angry Mic (the last Monday of the month at Angry Horse Brewing) back in October. They didn’t have any recorded music out at the time, but since then they’ve released two songs. I went with “Say Yes to Drugs.” The recording sounds great, but honestly, they really shine live.
