It's hard to believe, but we're actually in orbit around Earth! We made it back! Almost at least, because we're still in quarantine at the moment. They're afraid we have slave hens? At least that gives us time to tidy up the ship, sort out our souvenirs, go clay pigeon shooting using the asteroids we can't take home, and of course speculate about what celebrations are being prepared for our triumphant homecoming! Dear diary, this week we met another alien race! They look strange, we call them the Tikibari, and as it turns out, they're the ones behind the black monoliths we've been collecting. And also as it turns out, those really weren't meant for collecting. Also, the Tikibari are interested in old technology and they helped us fix the ship too! It was a very exciting week. The black monoliths we collected a few weeks ago started emitting a signal, and everyone's quite excited about it, even more so since we decoded the message! In this episode we discuss the possible implications, but we also talk about the planet we're currently orbiting, and about ukuleles obviously. There's something off with the air conditioning in the ship, so we've been confined to our cabin since yesterday. This also means that we currently have a different air mixture than usual. This has no side effects, with the exception that we decided to eat all the edible souvenirs we brought from all the planets we visited so far. Which in turn has no side effects, with the exception that the cabin seems brighter and the stars seem closer and the listener emails seem more profound. Have you ever recorded a podcast episode while walking on a treadmill? Well, Dirk just did and you get to listen to it! The good news is that Simon was standing just to the side, so at least one of the hosts isn't constantly out of breath. Why is Dirk on a treadmill? What's up with all of these black monoliths? Does the ship have a green house? And what does the Microsoft Zune have to do with anything? Listen in and find out! To everybody's surprise, we actually stumbled upon an Earth-like planet on our erratic journey through the universe. Trees, oceans, continents, weather - all the good stuff. Just no animals. A group of passengers decided that they preferred to stay there as opposed to spending the rest of the foreseeable future in a spaceship. That being a pretty big deal, we decided to make it today's topic. Also, we broke our cabin, so we're recording from the shuttle bay / arboretum. A recent survey among the passengers has shown that less than 50% believe we'll ever get back to Earth. If this ship is going to be our new home, it's time to make it a little more homey! How do 23rd century people make things homey, you ask? Well, tune in and find out! Disclaimer: this episode may contain traces of garden gnomes. Remember when we booked facilities for a pet? Well, we haven't actually used them, but other passengers have. Some brought pets, some still have them, and some guests suddenly have pets that they didn't have before. Expect to hear more about cats, dogs, blobs and flies in this episode. And obviously about chocolate. To confirm this episode went back in time, please email michaellasagna5@gmail.com with the episode number 273 in the subject line. Okay, so maybe a star system with two stars isn't so special, but these ones pulsate! How about them apples? While we're still trying to make our way home, we take this chance encounter as an opportunity to do some proper space research. And between all the Ooga Chakas and Walla Walla Bing Bangs, we do actually manage to decode something live on the show! The crew of Grandaddy is working on a new propulsion method, which needs all the energy and all the bananas they can find. Which means we're currently traveling even slower than usual and have our gravity rationed. But even though we haven't been anywhere interesting recently, we can still talk about all the exciting things that happen on board the ship. Hairy feet, anyone? Imagine a planet made of gold, with seas of quicksilver and its entire surface covered in one big maze. Sounds crazy? Not in space it isn't! Well okay, it ís a little crazy, but still real. And we spent the day trying to solve the maze. Or at least parts of it. On top of that, we have a bit of gossip to start off today's episode! There's not just one Dark Nebula out there, you know? There are many! And we just happen to be in one today. We take the opportunity to debunk a lot of the theories that existed about Dark Nebulae and also speculate about which specific type this one might be. And by speculate we mean guess at random. Because Grandaddy is currently undergoing maintenance, we took the opportunity to go on a quick road trip! We tossed a few things in a small pod and started to explore the solar system we're currently in. Where by "a few things" we mean drinks and the Bubble Condo, and by "explore" we mean bouncing through an asteroid storm and then laying on our backs watching the stars. You never know when you'll need some Space Pliers! This week we collected several gadgets that our fellow passengers brought along on the Space Tour. Some of them we know what they do and some of them we don't, but for most of them we wonder why on Earth you'd bring them on a two week trip to outer space? Then again, that trip has lasted for eight weeks already, so what do we know… To confirm this episode went back in time, please email michaellasagna5@gmail.com with the episode number 267 in the subject line. One of the benefits of being lost in space is that you get to visit planets that nobody has ever been to before. In most cases that just means another lava planet, another rock planet, or another ice planet. But in rare cases you encounter something exceptional. In this episode we talk about such an experience! And about woodblocks! To confirm this episode went back in time, please email michaellasagna5@gmail.com with the episode number 266 in the subject line. Enough with the Solar Flare Clubs and Overtourism Workshops, let's get this big chunk of metal moving properly again! This week we talk about all the different ideas we have about speeding up. We're all aboard! Because we are currently nowhere and haven't really been anywhere since last week. Regular listeners will know not to worry; when we don't really have anything to talk about, we're somehow at our best. We didn't just visit a planet with lots of ice. We didn't just visit a planet with lots of meteors. We didn't just meet interesting members of the crew and passenger band. And we didn't just smuggle a fluid that smells like vodka onto the ship. We did all of those things! And today we'll talk about them. We have all kinds of things to talk about this week! Who thought that being lost in space could be so exciting? First of all, Simon got into the first ever Passenger Council. Second, we visited a planet with a surface that retreats when you touch it. Third, we get to contribute to science! Somehow. At least a little bit. There's both good and bad news. The bad news is that we're no longer moving fast through space and don't really know where we are. The good news is that the space tour will last longer! In today's episode we mostly discuss the consequences of the breakdown itself, but we also talk about the ways we've been entertaining ourselves in the mean time. It's amazing how many things you can cram into a single space tour! We're one week in and have seen and done so much! It's hard to summarise that all in one short episode, but we're trying anyway. We jump back and forth quite a bit, and we not only talk about the different places we've visited, but also about the on-board entertainment. And about the thing we broke, obviously. We've just embarked on our very first space tour! And not just our very first space tour, but humanity's very first space tour! The next two weeks will be filled with space sightseeing, big band performances, space walks, and bathing in cosmic rays. Have you ever listened to two guys pack for a space tour? Didn't think so! Luckily you have the chance right now. In this episode we thoroughly detail the things laid out on the floor of Simon's apartment and contemplate whether or not we actually need all of them. If you think we have things like space suits and oxygen tanks, you've probably never listened to our episodes before. Did anybody say stuffed otter? We had the first lesson of a free course that will teach us how to walk through walls. So how does it work? Who knows! While we did learn the most important do's and don'ts, we realise we still have many questions for our teacher, such as what things can you carry with you? How loosely can you interpret 'carry'? And are we brave enough to try it live on the show? To confirm this episode went back in time, please email michaellasagna5@gmail.com with the episode number 256 in the subject line.
