I like the name Adam, I always have. My parents chose well. I like my last name, Powers. Its a strong name, literally, though at times it has brought me the occasional Austin Powers joke. Every one of us in this room, is by nature, a god-maker. In Genesis 1:27 we read God made man in His own image. But ever since the fall, weve been trying to return the favor by making God inour image. That's the whole point of the second commandment. Worshiping the right God isn't enough. So community, what is it? Community is a word that gets used loosely in our world today. It can either refer to a neighborhood, a social media group, a fan base, or any gathering of people with something in common. In the broadest sense, community simply means a group of people bound together by shared location, interests, or identity. People gravitate naturally towards others with similar perspectives and values, and society creates gatherings around common purposes all the time. Community in that general sense can be understood as togetherness, fellowship, camaraderie, or simply the absence
I like to study. Uh, well actually, scratch that. I love to study. This is a thing in my house. Uh, I, I think, I think it's a thing in my house. Uh, I enjoy spending my time in a good book and just kinda gleaning from it. Um, my family likes to drop some subtle hints to me in some funny ways. So good morning, everybody. I didn't get to say that earlier. Happy Father's Day to the fathers in the room. Um, this is not specifically a Father's Day sermon this morning. There's no Proverbs 31 manly wisdom or what- whatever, uh, sermon on deck. But it is about serving, and the reality is to be a father is a call to serve. Did any of you come in here this morning fearful, frightened, or with a sense of great dread? Most all of you, would answer no to that question. But, what would you think if I said that to be afraid would be a good way to enter the worship of God? Think of this. On one hand God is transcendent. For God to be transcendent means He is beyond anything we can ever imagine, He is bigger and grander, and wholly other than all else as God over all. So in-laws, in-laws are always fun. So as we come this morning, some of you, if you are married or have been married, you marry into a family beyond your own, which comes with parents of someone else. And so usually it stirs up all sorts of emotions. Whether you like your in-laws, whether you have a contentious love-hate relationship with your in-laws, everyone kind of has their own different stories. We took the kids over to Legoland this past week for a day of fun and they loved it! It really is a cool place, seeing all the huge different Lego builds theyve done over the years. Ill never forget the first fight I got in. It was in third grade and it was with a kid who lived down the street. His name was Chris, we were in the same grade in school, and he had just gotten a new paintball gun and wanted to show me. I thought it would be cool and that he might let me shoot it, so I ran down to his house and was excited to see it. Heres what happened. I get down the street, and he's there at the end of his driveway with the gun. I got closer and he held it up for me to look at and it was cool. Confession time. This past week for me was difficult in ways I did not expect. It was a week where I became very aware of my lack and the many needs I have in life, and so for most of the week I felt weak and frail instead of sure and stable. I know Im not the only one who has weeks like this, many of you do too. All this got me thinking, so I did a quick AI search and asked for a list of basic human needs. This is just some of what popped up. Physically we need to eat and drink healthy things not junky things to sustain ourselves. We need movement and activity and resistance to stay healthy.
