Habakkuk had a difficult time accepting what God was going to allow happen to Judah. Yet, by the end of chapter 3, he has come around to accepting that it will happen – but God will be there for His people even in the midst of the calamity. Babylon provides us a pattern of not only what it looks like to trust in yourself but the outcome of where that will lead. As God reminds Habakkuk that everyone will be held accountable for their lives, he warns us not to follow in the pattern of the Babylonians. Rather we are to place our trust in God for our salvation. The tragedy of Saul is that while he was given every advantage and opportunity in life to succeed, his sin destroyed him. As we see the end of King Saul, we are reminded that our hope in life and death is found in Jesus and the victory of the Messiah in midst of sin’s tragedy. Sometimes God says “no” to our plans. While we may not always see the reasons right away, we can trust that God’s plans are always better than our own. As God stops David’s plans, he reminds us that we can trust in his eternal purposes of seeing the blessings of God given to many people. While it was a single straw that broke the camel’s back, in the case of Saul it was more like an anvil. Saul has rejected God’s plan, God’s commands, and God’s chosen servant throughout his entire life and now God has turned away from him. Forgiving someone once is tough, forgiving them again is even worse. David comes face to face with Saul again, after Saul tries to kill him, but this time David has learned from his past mistakes. While David is often the “hero” of the story, we are reminded that he is not perfect. David nearly gives into his pride and anger, but in the grace of God he is restrained from his sin. God holds back David from sin, so that the Jesus the Messiah might show us that salvation is from the hand of God.
