You'll probably be remembered for what you lived for (at least for a while, until everyone forgets you!) But what will God remember you for? That should shape how you live.
As Nehemiah oversees the rebuilding of the Jerusalem walls, the people are keen. But opposition hits, and the initial excitement turns into exhaustion. As we build our lives on Jesus, there are a few key lessons we can take from this passage.
God doesn't just want us to believe that He keeps His promises, He wants us to live courageously, expecting Him to keep His promises as we seek to build His eternal kingdom.
Jesus calls us to follow Him, no matter the cost. What happens when this threatens our personal happiness?
Sometimes we see things that change us. And for the disciples - they saw Jesus risen from the dead - and they were changed forever. Their grief turned to joy, their fear turned to peace, and their doubt turned to faith and worship - showing us that when people encounter the risen Jesus for themselves, they are transformed. Have you been changed by him?
We all respond to pressure in different ways. Sometimes it can produce good things - other times it reveals some not-so-good things. As the pressure builds towards the Cross, both Jesus and Peter respond in different ways.
We long for community, but why is unity so hard to achieve? Jesus prays for us to be one, so why do churches have divsions and so many denominations?
As Jesus is hours away from the Cross, we get a glimpse of his heart's deepest desire. He prays. For himself and for his disciples.
What did Jesus say the Holy Spirit will do for us?
Following Jesus always has a cost. Jesus prepares his disciples for his leaving. They will be rejected, expelled, persecuted, and killed for their allegiance to him. But Jesus says the Spirit is on the way to help them stand firm.
Tough times, uncertain times, rudderless times. All are a given for every person. The disciples are going through one in John 14. But Jesus gives some golden promises that are beyond helpful for them and for us.
Failures in Christian leadership and public deconstruction stories are discouraging, but they're nothing new. We need to keep our eyes on Jesus, our glorious Saviour.
When Jesus washed the feet of his disciples he showed us what God is like. We are called to be a humble receiver of His grace and a humble servant of others.
